چکیده

A vaccine that uses one virus to deliver components of a second virus elicits T cells that recognize noncanonical epitopes. COVER A Classopollis meyeriana conifer pollen grain (~30 micrometers across) preserved in lake sediments deposited just after a massive, volcano-induced extinction event ~200 million years ago. This fossilized pollen grain is representative of the low-diversity plant assemblages found within the tropics of the Pangean supercontinent during the postextinction recovery period. See page 941.

Valuing Insect Pollination Services with Cost of Replacement

Value estimates of ecosystem goods and services are useful to justify the allocation of resources towards conservation, but inconclusive estimates risk unsustainable resource allocations. Here we present replacement costs as a more accurate value estimate of insect pollination as an ecosystem service, although this method could also be applied to other services. The importance of insect pollina...

Proximity to forest edge does not affect crop production despite pollen limitation.

A decline in pollination function has been linked to agriculture expansion and intensification. In northwest Argentina, pollinator visits to grapefruit, a self-compatible but pollinator-dependent crop, decline by approximately 50% at 1km from forest edges. We evaluated whether this decrease in visitation also reduces the pollination service in this crop. We analysed the quantity and quality of ...

Scarcity of ecosystem services: an experimental manipulation of declining pollination rates and its economic consequences for agriculture

Ecosystem services (ES) such as pollination are vital for the continuous supply of food to a growing human population, but the decline in populations of insect pollinators worldwide poses a threat to food and nutritional security. Using a pollinator (honeybee) exclusion approach, we evaluated the impact of pollinator scarcity on production in four brassica fields, two producing hybrid seeds and...

Native bees buffer the negative impact of climate warming on honey bee pollination of watermelon crops.

If climate change affects pollinator-dependent crop production, this will have important implications for global food security because insect pollinators contribute to production for 75% of the leading global food crops. We investigate whether climate warming could result in indirect impacts upon crop pollination services via an overlooked mechanism, namely temperature-induced shifts in the diu...

The effects of landscape fragmentation on pollination dynamics: absence of evidence not evidence of absence.

Animal-mediated pollination is essential for both ecosystem services and conservation of global biodiversity, but a growing body of work reveals that it is negatively affected by anthropogenic disturbance. Landscape-scale disturbance results in two often inter-related processes: (1) habitat loss, (2) disruptions of habitat configuration (i.e. fragmentation). Understanding the relative effects o...
